Mesoscopic thermal transport through a weak link
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider mesoscopic thermal transport between two bulk dielectrics joined by a narrow wire or weak mechanical link. In the ‘‘tunneling’’ regime where the phonon transmission probability through the link is small and the thermal conductance is much less than pk BT=6_; the thermal current is determined by a product of the local vibrational spectral densities of the two bodies. We derive an expression for the thermal current that is a thermal analog of the wellknown formula for the electrical current through a tunneling barrier. r 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. In recent years, semiconductor nanostructures have become the model systems of choice for investigation of electrical conduction on short length scales. Quantum transport is studied in a two dimensional electron gas because of the combination of a large Fermi wavelength and large mean free path. In the present work, a numerical method is implemented in order to contribute to the understanding ...
متن کاملMesoscopic transport of fermions through an engineered optical lattice connecting two reservoirs
We study transport of fermions in a system composed of a short optical lattice connecting two finite atomic reservoirs at different filling levels. The average equilibration current through the optical lattice, for strong latticereservoir coupling and finite temperatures, is calculated within the Landauer formalism using a nonequilibrium Green’s functions approach. We moreover determine quantum...
متن کاملThermal transport in superconductor/normal-metal structures
We review experiments over the last ten years on thermal transport in mesoscopic normal metals in contact with a superconductor. The main focus of this effort has been on the exploration of coherent thermal effects in mesoscopic normal-metal/superconductor structures, i.e. effects in which the phase of the quasiparticles participating in thermal transport is important. Coherence in thermal tran...
متن کاملQuantum master-equation approach to quantum transport through mesoscopic systems
For quantum transport through mesoscopic systems, a quantum master-equation approach is developed in terms of compact expressions for the transport current and the reduced density matrix of the system. The present work is an extension of Gurvitz’s approach for quantum transport and quantum measurement, namely, to finite temperature and arbitrary bias voltage. Our derivation starts from a second...
متن کاملCoherent Current States in Mesoscopic Four-terminal Josephson Junction
A theory is offered for the ballistic 4-terminal Josephson junction. The studied system consists of a mesoscopic two-dimensional normal rectangular layer which is attached in each side to the bulk superconducting banks (terminals). The relation between the currents through the different terminals, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures and junction sizes, is obtained. The nonlocal coupling o...
